Pulau Ay is a charming place accented by bright pastel colors and smiling people. There are still active nutmeg plantations on the island and the remains of ancient Fort Revenge (1616) along with old colonial plantation mansions one of which is still occupied by descendants of the original Dutch perkeneer family that first came to these islands in 1585. The real attraction of Ay is the sandy beaches and spectacular snorkeling or diving on the pristine coral reefs especially the drop offs that plunge thousands of meters straight down with visibility as clear as the air. This is where some of the islands finest wild pearls are found by local divers still using traditional methods without modern equipment. These pearls are highly valued by collectors the world over.
