Banda Neira is the capital of the Banda Islands. Founded by the Portuguese in the 1500's they started Fort Nassau in 1516. Finished by the Dutch in 1609 quickly followed by Fort Belgica started by the Dutch in 1611. They both make wonderful destinations for an evening walk.

The island's atmosphere is easy going and friendly with a strong colonial flavor. Neira town was once famous for its "mansions" built by Dutch nutmeg plantation owners. Today you can still visit several of them. This is where many of the famous Kora-kora races and Chakalele dances are held. Be sure to visit the museum and the islands vibrant market. Strolling round the island will quickly become a favorite pastime.
